A few weeks ago, I headed out to St Loy Wood near St Buryan here in West Cornwall with Ashley and her daughter Milly for a relaxed mother-and-daughter Cornish adventure shoot amongst
the bluebells.

It was one of those days where everything just seemed to fall into place. The light was soft and consistent, filtering nicely through the trees without being too harsh, and the woods were full of colour. Bluebells covered the ground in every direction, and it really does make that spot feel a bit special at this time of year.

We kept things easy from the start. Rather than sticking to a plan or setting up lots of poses, we just wandered through the woodland and stopped whenever something caught the eye. That’s always been more my approach—keeping things natural and letting moments happen rather than trying to force them.

Ashley and Milly made that part easy. They were completely themselves the whole time, chatting, laughing, and just enjoying being out together. It meant I could step back a bit and capture things as they were, which is always where the best images come from.
Gear-wise, I kept it simple. I mainly used my 24–70mm for the wider shots and general coverage, especially when we were moving around. Then I switched over to my 85mm when I wanted a bit more distance and to pick up on those quieter, more natural interactions. It’s a combination that works well for this kind of shoot without overcomplicating things.

What I like about sessions like this is how unstructured they feel. There’s no pressure, no rush—just a bit of time spent in a really good location, letting things unfold naturally.
St Loy Wood is always worth a visit when the bluebells are out. We didn’t make it down to the cove this time, but if you’re in the area, it’s definitely worth exploring a bit further.
All in all, just a really enjoyable, laid-back shoot in a great setting.
